Ribbit Rogue Hero Guide

The green frog who refunds HP so you can learn the anvil.

The Hero

The Hero is the green frog on the Steam header: cape, sword, dice in hand, swamp behind. Demo VODs and Next Fest recordings treat this character as the default, with a 75 HP bar and a starting relic that restores five hit points after each battle. That one sentence is the whole tutorial. You can take a fight that chips you, walk to a forge, and not need a campsite every other node. Play this frog until area one is boring. Then try the others from the characters hub.

Why the post-battle heal matters

Ribbit Rogue deals damage in chunks. A 9 and a 17 on consecutive telegraphs will still kill you if you greed. What the heal does is make winning a fight also a rest. You are allowed to spend a node on forging instead of a campsite. You are allowed to skip a fishing hole. You are allowed to learn combat without treating every scratch as a reset.

It does not tick during a boss. Pack a real heal face or a Medkit before bosses. The five HP refund is a map tool, not a duel tool.

Starter kit, as far as recordings show

Next Fest audio mentioned a 25 gold start, 75 HP, and a choice of early relics such as “end of turn if you did not attack, deal 4 to all” versus a delayed 16 shield versus rerolls on every five attacks. Those were run-start options in that build, not necessarily the 1.0 card for card. Treat them as a hint: the Hero is allowed to be a tempo frog (AoE if you skip attacking), a tank frog (big delayed shield), or a reroll frog. Pick the card that matches the first dice you see, then lock a build sentence.

Starter dice in playthroughs include quarterstaff and other readable faces. Keep the quarterstaff until a Rapier or Claymore is forged. Do not cut your only shield because a shuriken looked like the trailer.

Relics that love this frog

  • Pill — 1 damage per turn, +5 after battle. The Hero already heals after battle, so the tax is smaller than it looks.
  • Medkit — still good. The post-battle heal does not save a misread 17.
  • Skull — extra healing when packs die, on top of the five HP.
  • Fine Cutlery — the Hero lives long enough to stack those permanent face upgrades.
  • Blacksmith Hammer — spend the HP you just refunded on extra anvil visits.

Cracked Sword is a worse first pickup here than it is on a wizard frog with spare rerolls. Starting Weakness plus a 75 HP bar is how tutorials end early.

Routing on the Hero

Take one extra fight in the first area compared with a 60 HP frog. That extra fight is XP, which is relics, which is the run. Do not take two extra elites. The heal is five, not fifty. If a crab event offers HP versus a die, you can take the die more often than the armored frog can. Still do not take a trap when you are under 20.

Shops: 40G–75G at Herc is comfortable if you skipped a chest for +20G once. The Hero can skip a heal die at the shop because the relic already covers chip damage. Buy block or Twin instead.

Versus the other frogs

The wizard shot shows 90 HP and five rerolls — a different resource mix. The armored shot shows 60 HP. The Hero sits in the middle: enough HP to learn, enough heal to route, not enough rerolls to brute-force blanks. That is why this page exists as its own guide. If you jump to the hat first, you will spend those five rerolls on faces you do not understand and call the character strong when the real skill was the Hero’s patience.

First-run script

  1. Play the Hero only.
  2. Follow getting started through the first forge.
  3. Keep one shield die.
  4. Do not open Swamp Depth.
  5. After a win, read characters and pick the portrait whose resource you actually missed — rerolls or armor — not the one that looked cooler in a screenshot.

The Hero is not the “easy mode frog.” The swamp is still the swamp. This frog is the one that lets you see the math. Seeing the math is the whole game.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the Hero's starting relic?

Demo recordings restore five HP after each battle on a 75 HP bar. Confirm the 1.0 wording in-game; the map-heal identity is the point.

Can the Hero's heal save a boss fight?

No. It ticks after battles. Bring a heal face or Medkit for the boss itself.

Should I switch characters mid-profile?

Finish a Hero win first. Unique dice on the other frogs still need the same forging habits.

Is the Hero good on Swamp Depth?

Yes as a first Depth climb. The post-battle heal offsets the extra chip from stronger enemies while shops get more expensive.
