Ribbit Rogue Demo versus 1.0

If your hands remember Next Fest, here is what changed.

Demo versus 1.0

The Ribbit Rogue demo (Steam app 4436220) was the public lab. It shipped during Turn Based Thursday in March 2026, returned for June Next Fest, and stayed downloadable at 1.0 launch. If you put twenty hours into that lab, 1.0 will feel like the same language with extra chapters. If you bounced off the demo, 1.0 will not convert you. This page is the delta so you do not unlearn the good habits.

What the demo contained

Early demo notes from the developer:

  • First of two areas as a full run.
  • Ten new dice and relics, with progress meant to carry to the full game.
  • One of the three planned characters.
  • A handful of map events.
  • No Swamp Depth ladder in the recordings we have — Next Fest VODs say difficulty levels were not in the demo build they played.

Version 0.4 Deeper Swamp (around May–June 2026) then added:

  • The second area on the first difficulty with the starting character.
  • About forty relics, including a boss-relic system.
  • New abilities and dice.
  • Japanese localization.
  • Relics named in the news post: Amulet, Spare Pouch, Hand Lens, Pill, Pocket Watch, Floppy Disk, Empty Hourglass, Trick Coin (H/T), Blacksmith Hammer, plus a Skull rework to static HP.

0.4.2 (5 July 2026) was a feel patch: faster dice-info hover, larger controller deadzone, D-pad navigation, run-info button tweaks. Those quality-of-life bits are why 1.0 inspect feels snappy. They are also why this wiki’s controls page exists.

What 1.0 adds on top

Three characters, six bosses, 120-plus relics, Swamp Depth, 32 achievements, the rest of the event list, and a paid campaign instead of a fest slice. AUTOMATON’s launch feature is the best public inventory. If a demo habit was “I will see the rest later,” later is now. Read launch notes.

Habits to keep

  • Draw seven, pick four, reroll blanks.
  • Shift inspect before you lock.
  • Ten-die cap. Cut or merge.
  • Forge swaps and three upgrade points.
  • Skip (+20G) when the chest is off-plan.
  • Crits double shields and heals.

Those rules did not flip. Your combat literacy still spends.

Habits to drop

  • “There is only one frog.” There are three. See characters.
  • “Area two is a rumor.” It is in the product.
  • “I can ignore shops because the demo showered dice.” Depth will not.
  • “Boss relics are a 0.4 experiment.” They are how the second area is supposed to feel.
  • “I do not need a shield die; the Hero heals.” The heal is post-battle. Elites in 1.0 still telegraph 17.

Does the demo still matter after you own 1.0?

Yes as a friend-gate. Send the demo to anyone who thinks “dice roguelike” means auto-battler. No as your main save. Play 1.0. If Cloud carried unlocks, you already have the collection progress and can jump into a real run with the run planner. If Cloud did not, you lost a cosmetic head start, not a skill. The anvil still teaches.

The demo’s job was to prove the ten-die idea in color. It did. 1.0’s job is to let you finish the swamp. Let it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is the Ribbit Rogue demo still available?

Yes. Steam still lists the demo app next to the 1.0 purchase. Use it as a try-before-you-buy, then move to the full game.

Did the demo include all three characters?

No. Early demo notes promised one of three. 1.0 includes all three.

What was the Deeper Swamp update?

Demo patch 0.4: second area, many relics, boss relics, new dice, Japanese text. 1.0 sits on top of that branch.

Should I keep playing the demo after buying 1.0?

No. Keep it installed only to show friends. Your real runs belong in 1.0 with Swamp Depth and the full boss list.
